Hi! I’m Melissa. My career has taken me through early-stage startups and bigger, more established companies. I joined Route when it was just twenty people and watched it grow past 500. I ran the Spectacles launch at Snap and now lead product and AI strategy at Firstleaf. In every one of those jobs, I fed off the energy of a fast-moving team.
Working remotely has real upsides, but I noticed something once I moved to Honolulu. Hours alone in front of a screen wear on you. You lose the hallway conversation, the person you can vent to, the accountability that comes from being around other ambitious people in the same room.
What’s kept me going is a small group of former colleagues who’ve since scattered to other companies. I’ve never met most of their current coworkers, but I know the key players and what they’re dealing with, just from staying close. We’ll get on a call and work through a hiring decision, a stuck launch, a hard conversation with a manager, and somehow it doesn’t matter that I don’t know every detail of their business. Talking it through with someone who’s been in a similar seat is often more useful than advice from someone actually in the room, because we’re not tangled up in the politics.
A lot of networking groups throw you into a big pool of people at every level and hope something clicks. I didn’t want that for The Syndicate. We match people intentionally, by title, by domain, and by what they’re actually looking for. Not a mixer. Not a mentorship program. Just the kind of peers you’d run into if you still walked into an office every day.
